A federal judge in New York has sentenced Chinese businessman Guo Wengui to 30 years in prison. The exiled entrepreneur had previously convinced a Manhattan jury that he was offering lucrative investments to thousands of online followers — but the money flowed into his private pockets instead.

Prosecutors accused Guo of using online channels to recruit followers, promising them attractive returns or exclusive services. Rather than investing in the advertised projects, he allegedly used the funds primarily to finance his own extravagant lifestyle. The damage amounts to more than one billion US dollars. Together with his financier, hundreds of millions were allegedly embezzled.

In addition to the prison term, the court ordered the seizure of assets worth 889 million dollars. The prosecution had demanded at least three decades and classified the crime as extraordinarily severe. In its closing argument, it stated that even the crypto fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried, who was sentenced to 25 years, paled in comparison.

A jury had already found the defendant guilty in 2024 on multiple counts, including various forms of fraud, money laundering, and extortion. During his time in the United States, Guo used several aliases and portrayed himself as a fierce critic of the Chinese Communist Party.

The 57-year-old had left his home country in 2014 after investigations for bribery and embezzlement were launched against him in Beijing. In the United States, he cultivated close ties to government-adjacent circles and was known as a business partner of Steve Bannon, the former chief strategist of President Donald Trump. Bannon was arrested in 2020 on one of Guo's yachts on fraud charges.

The Chinese government responded cautiously to the verdict. A spokesperson for the foreign ministry in Beijing stated that the reports had been noted. Guo is wanted by Interpol at China's request.
