American authorities announced on Monday the discovery of an elaborate cross-border tunnel used for drug trafficking from Mexico into the United States. The underground passage, stretching 589 meters in length, featured electrical wiring, ventilation systems, reinforced walls, and a rail mechanism to transport contraband. In certain sections, the tunnel reached heights of up to 140 centimeters.

The passage originated in Tijuana, Mexico, and emerged in San Diego, California, where the exit was concealed beneath what appeared to be a commercial establishment. Access to the tunnel was gained through a hydraulic elevator, according to details released by investigators.

Following months of investigation, law enforcement conducted an operation that resulted in the confiscation of more than one metric ton of cocaine. The seized narcotics carry an estimated street value of approximately 45 million dollars. Four individuals have been charged in connection with the operation.

The case highlights ongoing efforts by U.S. agencies to combat transnational drug smuggling networks operating along the southern border. Tunnels remain a persistent method used by cartels to move large quantities of illicit substances into American territory while avoiding detection at official ports of entry.
