One Dead, Three Wounded in Shooting at California High School Graduation
A gunman opened fire in a school parking lot in Fairfield, California, shortly after a graduation ceremony ended, killing an 18-year-old and injuring three others including a child.
The violence erupted Wednesday evening around 7:15 p.m. in the parking area of Fairfield High School, which shares a campus with Sem Yeto High School. The ceremony honoring graduating seniors had just concluded, and families were gathering for photographs when shots rang out, according to police spokesperson Michelle Belyea.
An 18-year-old died at the scene. Three additional victims — ages 11, 20, and 25 — were transported to hospitals. Authorities have not released detailed information about their conditions.
"This is a very scary incident when something like this happens, especially at the end of a school event," Belyea told reporters. She added that detectives currently have no information about a suspect.
Suisun City Mayor Alma Hernandez confirmed on social media that an active shooter situation unfolded at the graduation. "Three people were shot at the Sem Yeto High School graduation at Schafer Stadium," she wrote, urging anyone with information to contact police and expressing condolences to the victims' families.
Witnesses described scenes of chaos and panic. One attendee, identified only as Jacob, said he was heading toward a photographer when a man suddenly appeared and began firing. "I backed up, he ran off, and I circled around," Jacob recounted. "My mom was still inside the stadium, so I ran to check on her."
Another witness, Lizette Ramirez, said she was walking toward the parking lot when she heard gunfire. She spotted her niece and mother, who were shouting at her to run.
Police sealed off the area around the school and are searching for witnesses to clarify the motive behind the attack. Authorities have stated that no active threat remains to the local community, though no arrests have been made.
