A motorist operating a large commercial vehicle assisted a female who had escaped confinement along a roadway in Aiken County, with the entire sequence captured by an onboard camera.
The event unfolded last Friday approximately 20 miles from Georgia. Anthony J. Moore, age 53, was navigating his route when an individual whose arms were secured behind her torso sprinted directly toward his vehicle.
Video without audio reveals the scene: the pedestrian moves across the truck's path, a Cadillac that had been stationed at the roadside veers past the truck and departs rapidly, and the pedestrian keeps running as the automobile disappears.
An incident report from local sheriff's deputies states the pedestrian had been on foot when the operator of a green Cadillac approached from the rear and misrepresented himself as an officer. The complainant said he took her telephone and government identification document, applied metal restraints, and forced her into the back of the automobile.
The operator later halted near a fenced estate and stepped out. The confined individual tried the rear portals but they were secured. While the operator rummaged in the storage compartment, she scaled the seating barrier and exited through the unobstructed operator-side portal.
Moore, heading south of the municipality, noticed the individual rushing in his direction. He reduced his window, and she urgently requested aid, stating a person was trying to take her. The pursuer then drew alongside Moore, displayed an object resembling official credentials, asserted he belonged to a policing agency, and claimed the individual had leaped from his automobile. He subsequently departed in the Cadillac.
Onlookers summoned emergency responders, assisted in removing the metal restraints, and offered hydration. The individual, who had completed her academic program the day prior, informed Moore that the suspect had also taken her completion certificate. She requested he accompany her to the location where she had broken free to look for abandoned property, but the search yielded nothing.
Law enforcement detained Jonathan Willard, age 39, from New Ellenton, the next day. He is charged with one count of unlawful seizure of a person and one count of falsely representing himself as an officer of the law. As of Thursday, he was still housed at the county detention facility without legal representation assigned and without scheduled judicial appearances.
Moore leads a religious congregation in Denmark, South Carolina, and previously served 27 years in the armed forces. His spouse, Betty, also holds a leadership role at the congregation.
When informed that Willard had been taken into custody, Moore felt reassured that the suspect would be unable to repeat such actions elsewhere.
