Police wound armed man during patrol-car attack in Westbury, New York

Law enforcement personnel in a Long Island suburb discharged their weapons and struck an assailant during a late-night altercation on Monday, according to CBS News.

The episode unfolded around 10 p.m. when emergency dispatchers received notice of a person behaving unpredictably and brandishing an edged weapon near vegetation in Westbury. Personnel in an unmarked vehicle located a figure fitting the account and moved to intercept.

As the automobile approached, the individual rushed from shrubbery wielding a long kitchen blade and shattered the glass on the rider's side where a seated officer was positioned. The local police chief, Patrick Ryder, explained that the occupant pivoted and discharged his firearm several times toward the attacker as the implement breached the pane. The projectiles failed to connect, prompting the assailant to dash toward the rear of the automobile.

At that point, the operator stepped out and fired, striking the attacker in the head. Ryder indicated that the round entered and exited the lower facial area. The wounded person, named as 27-year-old Adrian Thompson, was transported for medical care and is recuperating. The two law enforcement agents involved were also examined at a medical facility.

Records show a prior contact with Thompson in the spring regarding conduct suggesting psychological distress and inhalant misuse. Ryder added that the man had once studied medicine at an Ivy League institution in Manhattan and that family members described him as battling emotional difficulties.

Prosecutors are pursuing counts of intimidating an officer, with additional accusations under review.
