A 26-year-old man from Colombia lost his life after a federal immigration officer discharged a firearm during an enforcement action in Biddeford, Maine. Authorities later confirmed the individual who died was not the person they had been attempting to locate and detain.
Maine Senator Angus King, citing information from the Department of Homeland Security, verified to CNN that the fatal encounter involved a case of mistaken identity. This marks the second deadly incident involving personnel from Immigration and Customs Enforcement within a single week.
The confrontation unfolded on a Monday when agents sought to execute a deportation order. According to prosecutors in Maine, the targeted individual allegedly attempted to escape by driving a car toward one of the enforcement personnel. The officer responded by firing his weapon. The agency has since placed the shooter on administrative leave.
King indicated that the agents participating in the operation probably lacked body-worn recording devices.
A representative for the immigration agency defended the officer's actions, claiming the shots were fired due to perceived risks to community safety. The spokesperson explained that the vehicle operator was hit, first responders were summoned without delay, and the wounded man ultimately died from the trauma.
Advocacy groups in the area identified the fatality as a young Colombian who possessed authorization to remain in the country lawfully.
In the aftermath, crowds assembled in Biddeford — a municipality of roughly 23,000 people — to voice opposition to the agency's methods. Protesters displayed placards demanding the removal of ICE and accusing agents of homicide.
City leader Liam LaFountain called for straightforward explanations. State Governor Janet Mills, affiliated with the Democratic Party, voiced shock and characterized the federal operation as careless and disorganized, referencing early journalistic accounts.
Representative Chellie Pingree, also a Democrat, raised concerns that relatives of the deceased — among them a toddler aged three — may have observed the violence firsthand. She insisted on a comprehensive and open inquiry.
Since January, four people have now perished during operations conducted by this federal agency. Seven days prior, an agent in Houston, Texas, had gunned down a Mexican citizen during a roadside inspection. That individual passed away in medical care shortly afterward.
