A young woman from the western United States appeared before a judge this week, accused of ending the lives of her two infant children.

The 23-year-old defendant, identified as Andrea Shaw, stood for arraignment in Payette County on Thursday. She faces two separate counts of first-degree murder. Judicial officials fixed her bail at $2 million, KBOI reported.

The tragedy came to light during spring of this year, when law enforcement personnel located the remains of both toddlers inside a home located in Payette. Investigators immediately suspected criminal involvement and classified the incident as a deliberate killing. The initial inquiry proceeded without any person being named as a suspect.

Subsequently, a grand jury in Payette County returned an indictment against Shaw. Officers from Boise took her into custody. She was processed first at a detention facility in Ada County, then transported to Payette County for her court appearance.

Should prosecutors secure a conviction, the accused could receive either a lifetime prison term or the ultimate penalty under state statutes. The legal principle of innocence until proven guilty applies.

Further proceedings are set for mid-July.
