Dominican Republic Citizen Caught Smuggling Marijuana Out of Miami Airport

A 30-year-old woman was arrested at Miami International Airport after customs officers discovered more than 33 pounds of marijuana in her checked luggage, nbcmiami.com reports. Eliana Y. Acosta was stopped Thursday at the jet bridge before she could board a flight to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers were conducting inspections at MIA due to what the arrest report described as a "high trend of narcotics being smuggled outbound from the United States." During a search of Acosta's checked bag, officers found 28 vacuum-sealed packages containing a green leafy substance.

The substance tested positive for marijuana and weighed approximately 15.26 kilograms — or 33.64 pounds. Acosta acknowledged the luggage was hers when she was intercepted at the gate, according to the arrest report.

Acosta, a Dominican Republic citizen, resides in McAdoo, Pennsylvania. She was charged with cannabis trafficking and booked into jail. On Friday, a judge set her bond at $10,000.

The arrest is one of several recent drug trafficking cases at MIA. Earlier this week, a woman from California was also arrested at the airport on related charges.
