A routine call about merchandise theft turned lethal Saturday afternoon when a patrolman in Southgate, Michigan, opened fire on a male suspect outside a supermarket.
The 34-year-old individual died at a hospital after being struck by a single round. His identity remains withheld pending notification of relatives. The encounter took place in the parking area of a Meijer outlet along Fort Street.
Chief Mark Mydlarz stated that units were dispatched shortly before 4 p.m. following reports of ongoing retail fraud. Upon arrival, personnel attempted to halt two people — a man and a woman, aged 42 — as they departed the building with merchandise.
According to an eyewitness who requested anonymity, the duo was pursued before being intercepted near a walkway. The observer noted that the male appeared to try to get away before the situation deteriorated. While the woman was being restrained, the bystander heard a discharge and saw the man collapse.
Mydlarz confirmed that the suspect had drawn what was characterized as an edged weapon and moved aggressively toward the officers, causing one patrolman to fire. That officer has been removed from active duty with pay while the matter is reviewed.
The woman was initially held but later freed. Prosecutors are expected to receive documentation regarding potential theft-related charges against her.
No members of the department were wounded.
The episode coincided with the yearly Downriver Cruise, a well-attended occasion where crowds gather along Fort Street to view a stream of modified vehicles and motorbikes. The chief explained that extra personnel had been assigned for the festivities, facilitating a swift reaction to the theft report.
State-level authorities are leading the examination into the use of deadly force.
