Rex Heuermann, the New York architect known as the "Gilgo Beach killer," was sentenced on Wednesday to three consecutive terms of life imprisonment for first-degree murder, plus an additional 25 years for related second-degree murder charges. The case, which gripped the nation for years, concluded with emotional victim impact statements in a Riverhead courtroom on Long Island.

Before sentencing, Heuermann made a brief statement admitting guilt but adding that his words "mean nothing at this point." Judge Timothy Mazzei called him a "disgusting, vile, little man, if you're even a man at all. And a coward," prompting applause from the courtroom gallery.

Heuermann pleaded guilty in April to the brutal murders of eight women: Melissa Barthelemy (24), Megan Waterman (22), Amber Costello (27), Maureen Brainard-Barnes (25), Jessica Taylor (20), Valerie Mack (24), Sandra Costilla (28), and Karen Vergata (34). The former Manhattan-based architect strangled his victims, dismembered some of them, and dumped their remains along Long Island beaches, particularly Gilgo Beach.

The case began in 2010 when human remains were discovered along a coastal highway following the disappearance of one of the women. For years, the investigation yielded no suspect and inspired numerous documentaries.

Investigators eventually tracked Heuermann through DNA collected from a pizza box. In 2023, police arrested the married father of two at his dilapidated childhood home in Massapequa Park, a quiet Long Island neighborhood.

Family members delivered powerful statements during the hearing. Amanda, sister of victim Melissa Barthelemy, described receiving phone calls from Heuermann after the murder in which he detailed how he had sexually assaulted her sister and "let her body rot." She was 15 years old at the time.

Liliana Waterman, daughter of victim Megan Waterman, was four when her mother's body was found. She told the court she learned the gruesome details online at age nine and remembered asking her grandparents what the words "prostitute" and "pimp" meant.

All of Heuermann's victims were believed to be sex workers at the time of their deaths. The killer reportedly contacted some of them through Craigslist advertisements.
