Veteran Hollywood actor James Handy was found dead from a stab wound at his residence in the Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles on Wednesday morning, June 3. He was 81 years old.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded to a disturbing emergency call around 9:30 a.m. The caller, who identified himself as the son of the victim's partner, told the 911 operator: "I am the son of man, I have just killed the man of sin." When police arrived at the home on Erwin Street, the suspect was waiting outside and surrendered without resistance.

Investigators discovered Handy unconscious in the front yard with a stab wound to his chest. Paramedics rushed him to a nearby hospital, where medical staff pronounced him dead.

Police identified the suspect as 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, who lived in the same house with his mother, Handy's girlfriend. Authorities arrested him at the scene and booked him on a murder charge. His bail was set at two million dollars.

Law enforcement officials described the killing as an isolated incident and stated that the public faces no ongoing threat. Investigators have not disclosed what may have preceded the attack or what motive Gledhill might have had.

Handy, born March 19, 1945, in New York, built a career spanning more than five decades with over 100 film and television credits. Audiences knew him as the bartender Jimmy in the 2022 blockbuster "Top Gun: Maverick" alongside Tom Cruise. He also appeared as an exterminator in the 1995 classic "Jumanji," played a doctor treating Hugh Jackman in "Logan" (2017), and had a role in the horror-comedy "Arachnophobia" (1990). His television work included appearances in "Alias," "NYPD Blue," "Profiler," "Melrose Place," "Beverly Hills, 90210," and "Law & Order."
