Gunfire erupted near a community celebration in Toledo, Ohio, leaving at least a dozen people wounded, including two in critical condition.

The violence broke out late Saturday afternoon in the vicinity of the Old West End Festival, an annual two-day gathering in the city's historic district featuring live music, food vendors, house tours, and retail stalls. Authorities say hundreds of attendees were present when shots rang out.

According to the Toledo Police Department, preliminary findings suggest at least two gunmen were involved, possibly firing at each other. Witness Kevin Berry told The Guardian that festival-goers dropped to the ground as the shooting began. Wounded individuals were scattered across the arboretum area.

Additional officers had already been assigned to patrol the event for security purposes. Video footage posted online captured law enforcement rushing onto the festival grounds shortly after the first emergency calls came in.

City council member Theresa Morris expressed sorrow over the incident, noting the tragedy weighs heavily on both residents and visitors who attend the festival each year.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine stated that summer festivals ought to be safe spaces where families can spend time together without fear of violence. He expressed confidence that police would apprehend those responsible. As of the latest reports, no suspects had been taken into custody and the manhunt continued.

Toledo, located in northwest Ohio along the shores of Lake Erie, has a population of roughly 260,000.
