A 49-year-old man faces charges following accusations that he attacked his girlfriend during a domestic argument at her Greenland residence while her 10-year-old son was present, BVI News reports.

According to the news outlet, the episode unfolded sometime last week when officers responded to a call from a neighbor who said the woman was being beaten by her boyfriend inside the home. Upon arrival, police spoke with the victim, who claimed the confrontation started when she would not give her phone to her partner.

A struggle over the device ensued in the bedroom, during which the woman told authorities her boyfriend hit her eye and scratched her face as he tried to take it, BVI News understands.

The alleged attacker was not hurt, sources indicated. It remains unknown whether the victim required medical treatment. The man reportedly acknowledged that the two had fought over the cellphone, but told investigators he did not know how she was wounded.

He was arrested and placed in custody. Officers also directed him to collect his possessions from the apartment and arrange other housing. It is not yet known whether the case will advance to court.

Domestic violence continues to be a significant issue in the territory, and authorities have consistently encouraged victims and bystanders to come forward, noting that unchecked abuse in the home frequently worsens over time.
