Jenifer O'Neal, who once led the U.S. Virgin Islands Office of Management and Budget, was handed a seven-year prison term for her involvement in the Mon Ethos corruption scandal.

During Thursday's proceeding, O'Neal chose not to speak to the court. The judge overseeing the case remarked that she had exchanged her integrity for money through the scheme.

The Mon Ethos case centered on a government contract arrangement that federal prosecutors said was tainted by bribery and fraud. O'Neal was among several officials implicated in the conspiracy.

David Whitaker, who founded Mon Ethos and later cooperated with the government as a key witness, is also facing sentencing. Federal prosecutors have asked the court to impose a 22-year prison sentence on him.

The investigation and prosecutions have marked one of the most significant public corruption cases in recent Virgin Islands history, involving high-ranking territorial officials.
