The suspect in Sunday's shooting near Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, has died in hospital, kingstondaily.ca reports. The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) confirmed the death on Tuesday afternoon.

Police had identified the suspect on Monday as Sean Ward, 29, a resident of Quinte West. The shooting occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on Sunday, September 20 — during Yom Kippur, one of the most sacred days in the Jewish calendar.

Belleville Police have since increased patrols and are maintaining a heightened presence across the city, including at places of worship. Officers are continuing to work closely with community leaders to provide reassurance and support.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched in support of Constable Jeff Smith and his family following the shooting. Smith was injured during the incident outside the synagogue. The fundraiser was organised by members of Toronto's Jewish community and has drawn donations from across Canada.

Organisers say they are coordinating with the Belleville Police Service and Smith's family to determine how the funds will be distributed. The campaign will remain open indefinitely as Smith continues his recovery.
