Record drug seizure in Dominica as police net EC$46 million in cocaine

Dominica police announced Friday what Acting Commissioner Lincoln Corbette called the largest cocaine seizure in the country's history — 1,730 kilograms with an estimated street value of EC$46.764 million, according to stvincenttimes.com.

"We have dwarfed that," Corbette said at a press conference, referring to a previous seizure of roughly 3,000 pounds of cocaine recorded around 1981 or 1982. "We seized, I believe, the biggest haul ever, ever in Dominica."

The bust was carried out earlier this week as part of the ongoing Operation Clean Street. Corbette congratulated the officers involved "for their hard work," adding: "That is 46 million dollars that will not be in the hands of the criminals to cause damage and danger to our citizens. Cocaine is a very dangerous substance."

The acting commissioner did not confirm whether any arrests had been made specifically in connection with the cocaine seizure. He did state, however, that Operation Clean Street has produced 24 arrests to date — 19 males and five females — all charged with various offences.

Officers also seized significant quantities of cash during the operation: more than US$10,000, 800 Barbados dollars, 400 euros, and EC$30,507.

A range of firearms was recovered as well, including two shotguns, one submachine gun, one nine-millimetre Taurus pistol, seven air rifles, and two Glock pistols, along with several rounds of ammunition.
