A massive narcotics operation has yielded the most significant cocaine capture ever recorded on the island, with officials putting the street worth at well over EC$46 million.

The stash, totaling 1,730 kilograms, was uncovered during the course of Operation Clean Street earlier this week, as detailed by the Jamaica Observer.

Interim Police Commissioner Lincoln Corbette unveiled the findings during a media briefing held on Friday. He pointed out that although authorities had previously intercepted approximately 3,000 pounds of the substance back in 1981 and 1982, the current recovery dwarfs that earlier figure.

Corbette lauded the officers for their dedication, noting that tens of millions of dollars would now be kept out of criminal hands. He also stressed the severe danger that cocaine presents to the population.

While the commissioner stopped short of confirming whether anyone had been taken into custody specifically for the cocaine itself, he did disclose that the broader operation has produced 24 arrests to date—nineteen males and five females—who stand accused of assorted violations.

Beyond the narcotics, the sweep has netted considerable currency and an arsenal of weapons. Confiscated money includes upwards of US$10,000, 800 Barbadian dollars, 400 euros, and EC$30,507. The weaponry recovered comprises two shotguns, a sub-machine gun, a nine-millimetre Taurus sidearm, seven air rifles, and two Glock handguns, plus assorted ammunition.
