Hotel entrepreneur shot dead in Puerto Iguazú: 82-year-old ex-father-in-law principal suspect

Alfredo Matías Wiebel Giampaoli, a 48-year-old hotel and catering entrepreneur based in Puerto Iguazú, was shot dead in the chest on Friday at midday, according to pagina12.com.ar. The incident occurred at the intersection of República Argentina and Pancho Ramírez streets, in the Industrial Quarter area of the Misiones city.
The police physician confirmed that the victim had a gunshot wound, presumably from a 9-millimetre calibre weapon. Wiebel was found dead lying on the floor of the commercial premises. His body was subsequently transferred to the Forensic Medical Service in Posadas for an autopsy.
Ex-father-in-law detained under police custody at a clinic
Neither the weapon nor the person who fired the shot was found at the scene initially, which prompted the opening of urgent investigations by officers from Regional Unit V. The inquiries led to the identification of Alfredo Salazar, 82 years old and the victim's ex-father-in-law.
At around 20:00 on the same Friday, it was reported that Salazar was admitted to a clinic in Iguazú. He remains there under police custody. According to sources consulted by the newspaper La Nación, Wiebel had divorced Salazar's daughter—the mother of his two children—some six months earlier and had begun a new relationship in the city.
Economic dispute, the motive being investigated by authorities
Sources from the business community in Puerto Iguazú indicated that there was speculation about economic and financial differences between Salazar and his former son-in-law. Authorities are treating this dispute as the possible motive for the crime, although the precise causes of the confrontation that they may have had in the commercial premises remain under investigation.
An entrepreneur and racing driver with a prominent profile in Misiones
Wiebel was a recognised figure in the province. Together with his brother, he was owner of the Holy franchise, a gastropub with outlets in Iguazú and on the Posadas waterfront, and also controlled the Z Hotel Boutique Iguazú. Outside the business world, he stood out as a regional and national racing driver, with participation in rally, TC 4000 Misionero, and Procar 4000 in his Class B.
His ex-father-in-law Salazar also has a significant profile in the private sector: he is the owner of Despacho Aduanero Echeverria y Asociados, with significant operations in the Triple Frontier, conducts flour export business to Brazil, and owns properties in Miami, Buenos Aires and Brazil.
