Basel: 53-year-old Turkish national arrested over telephone fraud
Basel-Stadt cantonal police arrested a 53-year-old man with Turkish citizenship on Tuesday and, on the order of the public prosecutor's office, remanded him in custody. The suspect is alleged to have been involved in telephone fraud against a 67-year-old woman. The public prosecutor's office has applied to the court for remand in pre-trial detention for the accused.
According to investigations so far, unknown individuals had impersonated police representatives and a bank over the telephone. They claimed there was a security problem. The callers persuaded the victim to hand over a substantial sum of cash to a stranger at her place of residence. The authorities have not disclosed the exact amount.
The arrest followed a prevention operation. During this, the investigation service noticed a person acting suspiciously. Subsequent inquiries revealed strong grounds for suspicion of the offence. For tactical reasons in the investigation, the public prosecutor's office is releasing no further details.
The authorities explicitly point out that neither banks nor the police nor other authorities request the surrender of cash or valuables over the telephone. When receiving such calls, it is recommended to end the conversation immediately and alert the police on 117. Further advice on prevention can be found on the website of Basel-Stadt cantonal police.
