A man drove into a group outside a bar in Caen, killing two and wounding nine. The suspect, a Chechen-Russian man, was arrested 20km away.
Second fatality confirmed in Caen car ramming attack
A second person has died following a car ramming outside a bar in the northern French city of Caen, RTÉ News reports. A 26-year-old man was arrested after driving into a group of people late last night, in an incident that initially left one dead and ten injured.
The first victim, confirmed dead on the day of the attack, was a 35-year-old Afghan man, according to a police source. The second fatality, aged 28, is also believed to be Afghan, regional prosecutor Joël Garrigue said. Nine others were wounded, all male and aged between 17 and 36, with seven of them in critical condition.
The ramming is thought to have been triggered by a fight, a police source said. The Caen prosecutor's office stated there was no apparent terrorist motive.
The suspect — a Russian man of Chechen origin — was not known to intelligence services but had prior contact with police for traffic offences, according to prosecutors. He fled the scene before being apprehended in Ouistreham, approximately 20km from Caen.
Police have opened an investigation on charges of murder and aggravated assault, the deputy prosecutor confirmed. All victims appeared to be men between the ages of 17 and 40, a Caen security official said.
