The gunman who died during a failed hold-up at a grocery store on Mandela Avenue has been named as 24-year-old Nia Emmanuel, Kaieteur News reports.

Emmanuel, who lived on Norton Street in Lodge, Georgetown, had been on the run from authorities since late last year. The Guyana Police Force said he was being sought over an incident on November 3, 2025, in which he allegedly fired a loaded weapon at another person with intent to harm.

The fatal confrontation unfolded around 8:40 p.m. on Wednesday at the People's Choice supermarket. Three men entered the shop, and one of them — armed with a handgun — forced two unarmed security staff to lie on the floor at gunpoint.

A police officer on mobile patrol spotted the crime in progress, stopped the vehicle, and went inside. The armed robber reportedly fired a shot toward the officer, who responded with his service weapon. The trio fled in separate directions, and the gunman collapsed in a drain along Mandela Avenue.

Officers recovered a .38 revolver with three live rounds and one spent cartridge from the deceased, plus three more spent casings from the scene. All evidence has been secured as inquiries proceed.

Emmanuel's remains were transported to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where an autopsy is pending. Investigators are still trying to track down the other two individuals involved in the attempted heist.
