A man armed with a firearm lost his life on Wednesday night following a shootout with a law enforcement officer at a grocery store located on Mandela Avenue in Georgetown.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased individual.

According to News Room Guyana, the episode took place shortly before 8:45 p.m. inside People Choice Supermarket. Three individuals had allegedly entered the establishment planning to commit a robbery.

Reports indicate that upon gaining entry, the trio confronted two security personnel who were not carrying weapons. The guards were ordered to the floor at gunpoint.

Meanwhile, a police rank conducting routine patrol in the surrounding area reportedly observed the criminal activity underway. The officer moved in to confront the perpetrators, at which point the armed assailant reportedly discharged a round aimed at the lawman.

The officer responded by firing his own weapon. All three intruders then ran off in separate directions.

The man with the gun made it onto Mandela Avenue before falling into a drainage trench nearby. Investigators later found him clutching a .38 revolver in his right hand.

Medical personnel subsequently declared him dead. The remaining pair of suspects eluded capture and remain at large as detectives continue their search.
