Bartica boat captain Dwayne Sookdeo charged with attempted arson, bailed at $100,000

A 34-year-old boat captain from Puruni Landing appeared in Bartica court on June 29 on an attempted arson charge. Dwayne Sookdeo pleaded not guilty and was granted $100,000 bail.

Puruni Landing boat captain faces attempted arson charge in Bartica court

A 34-year-old boat captain from Puruni Landing, on the Middle Mazaruni River, has been charged with attempting to set fire to a building, Kaieteur News reports.

Dwayne Sookdeo appeared before Magistrate Teriq Mohammed at the Bartica Magistrate's Court on Monday, June 29. He was charged under Section 146 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01, which covers the offence of Attempting to Set Fire to a Building.

Sookdeo entered a not guilty plea and was granted bail in the sum of $100,000. The matter was adjourned to August 10, 2026.
