A serving member of Guyana's police force has owned up to the slaying of a 26-year-old Cuban woman, whose decaying corpse was located in coastal vegetation nearly a week after she failed to show up for work.

A serving member of Guyana's police force has owned up to the slaying of a 26-year-old Cuban woman, whose decaying corpse was located in coastal vegetation nearly a week after she failed to show up for work.

Dailen Paneque Gómez resided in Mon Repos, along the East Coast of Demerara. She was last spotted in the predawn hours of Thursday, June 18, 2026, while traveling to her workplace near Lusignan. After she never arrived, relatives reported her absence, setting off a search led by the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters.

At approximately 7:50 p.m. on Wednesday, her remains were discovered concealed among bushes in the same coastal region. The remains had already begun to break down. Authorities quickly labelled the case a homicide.

Wendell Blanhum, who serves as both Crime Chief and Deputy Commissioner of Police, informed Kaieteur News that the uniformed suspect was apprehended and later acknowledged carrying out the fatal attack.

Blanhum quoted the detainee as saying he had fired a gun at the victim.

Sources familiar with the matter told Kaieteur News that the accused and Paneque Gómez had been romantically linked prior to the incident.
