Police Constable Charged with Murder of Cuban National Found Dead in Enmore Backdam

A 20-year-old police constable has been remanded to prison after being formally charged with the murder of Cuban national Dailen Paneque Gomez, Kaieteur News reports.

Randy Thomas appeared before His Worship Magistrate Teriq Mohamed at the Vigilance Magistrate's Court on Monday, June 29. The indictable charge of murder, contrary to common law, was read to him. Thomas was not required to enter a plea and was remanded to custody. The matter has been adjourned to July 21, 2026.

The charge relates to the death of Dailen Paneque Gomez, 26, a Cuban national residing at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara. She was last seen alive on June 18, 2026, while travelling to her workplace at the Mon Repos Health Centre. Her disappearance prompted immediate concern and triggered a police investigation.

On June 24, 2026, her decomposed body was recovered from bushes at Enmore Backdam, East Coast Demerara — six days after she was last seen. Police sources indicated the discovery followed sustained investigative efforts by detectives who had been tracking movements and leads developed during the missing persons inquiry.

The recovery of the body marked a turning point in the investigation, leading directly to the arrest of the constable. Kaieteur News previously reported that investigators believed the suspect was known to the victim, and that initial inquiries pointed to a targeted attack. The two were believed to have met on the day she went missing.

It is further alleged that Thomas subsequently led investigators to critical information during questioning. Those claims, however, have not been tested in court.

Authorities have not yet disclosed a formal motive, and the investigation remains ongoing. The case will return before the Vigilance Magistrate's Court on July 21, 2026.
