A construction worker died after a car, allegedly driven by someone over the alcohol limit, struck his motorcycle at Reliance, sending him flying 50 feet.

A 45-year-old builder lost his life on Saturday afternoon when a motor car collided with his motorcycle along the main thoroughfare at Reliance, on the Essequibo Coast in Region Two.

The deceased has been identified as Satesh Persaud, commonly called Tony, who resided at Lot 87 Reliance Housing Scheme and worked in construction.

According to information from Kaieteur News, the crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. Persaud was exiting an access road and attempting to cross the main route on his motorcycle when the oncoming vehicle — registration PAM 8929 — slammed into him.

Early findings and video footage from security cameras suggest the car was travelling south at excessive speed along the eastern carriageway. The force of the impact launched Persaud from his bike, and he landed roughly 50 feet away.

He suffered injuries to his head and was unconscious when passers-by rushed him to Lima Regional Hospital. A physician there declared him dead upon arrival.

Law enforcement officials seized the vehicle and administered a breath test to the person behind the wheel. The results showed 48 micrograms of alcohol — surpassing the legal threshold by 12 micrograms. The driver was placed under arrest and remains detained as enquiries proceed.
