A 32-year-old lorry operator is under arrest after police uncovered a concealed pistol and live rounds during a roadside search in Region Seven.

Officers in Regional Division Seven arrested a 32-year-old lorry operator on Saturday after discovering a hidden firearm and matching ammunition inside his vehicle during a routine operation at Sherima.

According to a report from Kaieteur News, law-enforcement personnel were carrying out checks in the area around 9:30 a.m. when they pulled over a motor lorry. The vehicle was being driven by a man from Timehri North on the East Bank of Demerara. A 20-year-old citizen of Venezuela was travelling with him.

During the inspection, officers reportedly located a 9mm Taurus handgun together with three live rounds tucked away in a compartment of the truck. The driver was immediately taken into custody and transported to Sherima Police Station, where the seized weapon and bullets were logged as evidence.

He remains detained while detectives continue their enquiries.
