The Guyana Police Force has directed Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and his father, businessman Nazar 'Shell' Mohamed, to surrender all personal firearms and ammunition they hold.

Authorities in Georgetown have instructed two prominent figures to give up all privately held guns and bullets they possess.
According to The St Kitts Nevis Observer, a senior law enforcement official sent written notice to Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and his father, Nazar "Shell" Mohamed, demanding they explain in writing why their permits to carry weapons should not be cancelled.
The father and son are currently battling an American request to send them overseas to stand trial. A grand jury in Florida indicted them in autumn 2025 on multiple counts including financial crimes. Their legal challenge has reached the Caribbean Court of Justice, the region's top tribunal.
The notice from the second-in-command at the national police force arrived on Tuesday. It told the men to give all their guns and bullets, plus the accompanying paperwork, to the officers who delivered the message right away.
This comes after the pair already turned in approximately seventy weapons used by their security teams to guard homes and commercial properties. That happened following American penalties imposed in mid-2024.
Azruddin stated he gave up a shotgun, a rifle, and a handgun. His father parted with a handgun and a shotgun. These were handed in after the men renewed their permits near the end of April 2026.
The American financial penalties followed an inquiry by a US government office into the family's commercial dealings. Officials claim the pair dodged over fifty million dollars in taxes that should have gone to Georgetown on shipments of more than ten thousand kilogrammes of precious metal.
The younger Mohamed had earlier declined an offer of bodyguards from the legislature, saying he could not trust the individuals who might be sent. He claims the governing party is behind this latest move by officers.
