A man who admitted to stabbing his wife and leaving her body in a canal near their Uitvlugt home was discovered deceased in custody at Leonora Police Station, reportedly using his own clothing.

A suspect in a domestic homicide investigation was discovered dead while being held at a police station on the West Coast of Demerara, according to Kaieteur News.

Hemat Kumar Mohamed, who had been detained in connection with the death of his spouse, was found in his cell at the Leonora lock-ups on Friday. Law enforcement officials indicated that he apparently used a garment he had been wearing to end his life.

The grim discovery occurred when an officer brought food into the cell after Mohamed's son had delivered a meal around mid-morning. The detainee did not answer when called, prompting the rank to enter and find him lifeless.

Mohamed had been apprehended the previous day, June 25, after investigators located the remains of 46-year-old Shavanie Hanoman in a waterway close to the couple's dwelling in the De-Groot Enkline area of Uitvlugt.

While being questioned, he reportedly owned up to attacking his wife with a blade during a domestic dispute on Wednesday — the final occasion she was observed alive — before forcing her into the canal.

On the date he was taken into custody, Mohamed required medical care and was transported to Leonora Cottage Hospital at about 6:00 p.m. He was discharged shortly before midnight and transported back to the station, where he was placed in a cell. He was found dead there the following morning.

The circumstances surrounding his death in custody are likely to prompt scrutiny regarding monitoring procedures at the facility.
