A male detainee who had reportedly acknowledged murdering his partner was discovered lifeless inside a police cell on Friday, fewer than twenty-four hours after officers placed him under arrest.

Kaieteur News reports that police apprehended Hemat Kumar Mohamed on Thursday once the remains of Shavanie Hanoman, 46, were spotted floating in a waterway close to their De-Groot Enkline, Uitvlugt residence. Investigators indicated that Mohamed later acknowledged attacking his spouse with a blade during a domestic dispute on Wednesday — the final occasion anyone saw her alive — before forcing her body into the canal.

Following his detention, authorities moved Mohamed to Leonora Cottage Hospital for treatment at roughly 6:00 p.m. Medical staff released him near 11:40 p.m., after which he was returned to his cell at Leonora Police Station.

The next day, around 11:24 a.m., the suspect's child arrived at the facility carrying a meal for his father. A uniformed member collected the food and approached the cell, shouting for Mohamed. When no reply came, the rank entered and found the prisoner unresponsive. Officials indicated he had fashioned an instrument from an article of his own apparel to take his own life.

Constabulary representatives did not reveal Mohamed's age. The fatality in custody will likely prompt scrutiny of how closely prisoners are observed and what suicide-prevention measures are in place at the station.
