Police Gunfire Kills One Robber at Georgetown Supermarket; Two Escape
A hold-up at a grocery store on Mandela Avenue turned fatal on Wednesday night when a bandit died following an exchange of gunfire with a law enforcement officer.
The episode unfolded around 8:40 pm at the People's Choice supermarket. Early reports suggest three men entered the premises. One of them, wielding a pistol, allegedly forced two security guards — neither of whom was armed — to lie on the ground.
A police officer travelling on mobile patrol spotted the crime unfolding and intervened. The armed intruder reportedly discharged his weapon in the officer's direction, prompting the rank to fire back with his own gun. The three intruders then bolted from the building, each running a different way.
The pistol-wielding bandit eventually tumbled into a roadside drain on Mandela Avenue. Medical personnel on duty examined him and confirmed he had died. Detectives later processed the location and seized a .38 revolver containing three live bullets, plus a number of spent cartridges. The other two participants in the robbery remain unaccounted for.
