Gunshot near Guyana's Office of the President: 9mm round found on compound

A firearm was discharged near the Office of the President in Georgetown on Friday night. Police found a suspected 9mm warhead and damage to a parked bus.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is investigating a firearm discharge near the Office of the President in Georgetown, Kaieteur News reports. The incident took place at approximately 21:15hrs on Friday, 21st August, 2026.

According to a police statement issued on Saturday, a rank on duty at the location reported hearing what sounded like a gunshot originating from the direction of the Square of the Revolution.

A subsequent search of the compound uncovered damage to a motor bus assigned to the Office of the President. The vehicle was parked on the northeastern side of the compound, facing south. Investigators noted an indentation surrounded by cracks on the windscreen.

"A suspected 9mm warhead was also found on the ground in front of the bus and has been lodged as evidence pending forensic examination," the GPF said.

CCTV footage from the area is currently under review. Several individuals have been questioned in connection with the ongoing investigation, police confirmed.
