Suspected gunshot strikes presidential compound bus in Georgetown
The Guyana Police Force is investigating an alleged firearm discharge near the Office of the President in Georgetown, newsroom.gy reports.
The incident took place at approximately 21:15hrs on Friday, August 21, 2026, in the vicinity of the Square of the Revolution.
A police rank on duty at the location reportedly heard what sounded like a gunshot coming from that direction. During subsequent checks within the compound, officers discovered an indentation with surrounding cracks on the windscreen of a motor bus attached to the Office of the President. The vehicle was parked on the northeastern side of the compound, facing south.
A suspected 9mm warhead was recovered from the ground in front of the bus. The projectile has been lodged pending further forensic examination.
As part of the ongoing investigation, police are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and have questioned several individuals.
