Georgetown Vendor Faces Drug Trafficking Accusation After Street Search
A young man who sells goods for a living found himself before a city magistrate after police claimed to have uncovered a sizable stash of illegal drugs during a search along a busy Georgetown thoroughfare.
Tyrone De Groot, aged 27 and hailing from River View in the Ruimveldt area, was brought before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty on Friday, July 3, 2026. He denied the allegation that he possessed narcotics with the intent to distribute them, a violation of the nation's controlled substances legislation.
The judicial officer ordered his temporary release upon posting $250,000 in security. As a condition of his freedom pending trial, De Groot must present himself to law enforcement on the first and third Friday of every month. The proceedings were postponed until July 24 to allow prosecutors time to share evidence with the defence.
The arrest occurred two days prior to the court appearance, on June 30, when officers carried out a targeted operation along the Ruimveldt Public Road, close to where Massy Supermarket stands. Authorities said they acted on a tip and approached the accused, who was working as a vendor. During a personal search, they reportedly retrieved a dark-coloured plastic bag stuffed with plant material suspected to be marijuana.
The young man was then conveyed to the headquarters of the Criminal Investigation Department. In his presence, the seized material was placed on a scale and measured at roughly four pounds before being placed into storage as case evidence.
