A deliberately set fire ravaged a two-storey dwelling on Winkle Road, New Amsterdam, early Sunday, forcing seven residents from two households onto the streets. Investigators with the Guyana Fire Service concluded the inferno was the work of unknown arsonists, Kaieteur News reported.

Joel Jagmohan, a 23-year-old labourer, lived in the ground-floor unit with his spouse, their newborn, and his elderly dad. He remembered being shaken awake in the small hours after his father sensed dangerous warmth in the rear chamber. The older man investigated and spotted flames licking the exterior of the structure.

"I run in and run out, and I fall down. I panicked. I collect me son," Jagmohan recounted. He succeeded in guiding his loved ones out before the lower level sustained harm.

The top floor belonged to Gail Ann Williams, 49, who was handling errands when an acquaintance rang to warn her. Her teenage daughter and pre-teen son were asleep upstairs. The 17-year-old girl said she had dozed off in her mother's quarters while her sibling rested in hers. She jolted awake to find thick haze everywhere.

Wanita described the terrifying effort to stir her brother, terrified he had already perished, before they dashed to a nearby residence for protection. The upper storey was reduced to ruins.

Williams placed her financial damage above $3 million, counting lost gadgets, a power generator, PVC gear, domestic machines, and a motorbike worth upwards of $600,000.

Jagmohan, a tenant of three years, and Williams, who had spent her entire life there, both commended the fire brigade's swift reaction. Crews reached the scene in roughly five minutes and doused the flames, sparing a segment of the bottom half.
