Armed robbery on Bent Street, Georgetown: suspect arrested, pistol recovered

A food vendor on Bent Street, Georgetown was robbed of his GY$200,000 gold chain by two armed men on Sunday. One suspect was apprehended; the other fled east on a motorcycle.

A prime suspect is in police custody after two armed men robbed a food vendor of a gold chain valued at GY$200,000 on Sunday morning, demerarawaves.com reports.

The incident took place at approximately 11:50 a.m. on Bent Street, Georgetown, where the 24-year-old victim was operating a food stand. According to the Guyana Police Force, two males arrived at the scene on a black Honda XR motorcycle.

The pillion rider, armed with a firearm, dismounted and approached the vendor, demanding his belongings. The victim handed over a yellow metal chain valued at $200,000. A scuffle then broke out between the victim and the armed suspect, during which the suspect allegedly discharged two rounds. The firearm fell to the ground in the course of the struggle.

Members of the public intervened to assist the victim. One suspect was held at the scene, while the second fled eastward along Bent Street on the motorcycle.

The Guyana Police Force said they recovered one Smith & Wesson .40 calibre pistol, three live rounds of ammunition in a magazine — dropped by one of the bandits during the scuffle — and one spent shell casing from the scene. The firearm, ammunition and spent shell were lodged as evidence.

The apprehended suspect sustained injuries during the confrontation and was escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he is receiving medical treatment under police guard.

Investigators said CCTV footage from the area will be reviewed as part of the ongoing inquiry. The second suspect remains at large and is being actively sought by police.
