A young man who works on farms has been placed behind bars while awaiting further court proceedings over the killing of a minor and injuries to an elderly relative.

A man in his early twenties who earns a living through farm work was sent to jail on Tuesday after being formally accused of ending a young boy's life, police have confirmed.

Shaheed Mohamed, aged 23, divides his time between two addresses — one at Providence along the East Bank Demerara and another at Zeelugt New Housing Scheme on the East Bank Essequibo. When he appeared before Magistrate Alisha George at the Leonora court, he was not asked to state whether he accepted or denied the accusation, as the matter is one that must eventually be heard before a judge and jury. The presiding officer ruled that he should stay in detention until the case is called again on July 20.

Officers picked him up on Saturday, June 6. The arrest came roughly twenty-four hours after what detectives believe was a violent early-morning episode at a house in Phase 3 of the Zeelugt New Housing Scheme. There, a child who had not yet reached his eighth birthday — Adriel Aftab Mohamed — was found with a fatal neck wound. An older woman, seventy-two, who shared the home with him, was also discovered with serious injuries.

According to the official account, a relative of the household arrived at the building shortly after five in the morning and came upon the grim scene. The senior was rushed for medical care; hospital staff later indicated she was in a stable condition.

Those leading the inquiry have noted that the man now in custody bears no blood relation to either the deceased youngster or the wounded pensioner. They have also said there were no indications that any property was removed from the residence during the incident.
