Law enforcement officers detained a 19-year-old instructor on Wednesday after suspected narcotics turned up inside his automobile during an anti-crime sweep in Cullen, Essequibo Coast, Region Two.

According to Kaieteur News, the operation began around 18:15 hrs. that evening. Personnel conducting the exercise approached the young man and sought consent to conduct a search, which he granted. The inspection of his person yielded no contraband.

Attention then shifted to his black Mazda sedan, bearing registration PAD 2574, parked a short distance away. There, on the left-side rear passenger seat, officers spotted a large black plastic bag. Upon opening it, they found plant material—leaves, seeds, and stems—that they believed to be cannabis.

The instructor was shown the discovery and told he was being treated as a suspect in the illegal drug trade. He rejected ownership of the substance, telling officers he had left the vehicle unsecured, stepped away, and returned to the spot where they found him seated.

He was placed under arrest. A more thorough inspection of the sedan later revealed a Guyana Police Force badge fastened to the roof above the driver's seat. Questioned about this item, the detainee claimed an officer had rented a different vehicle from him in the past, forgotten the badge inside, and that he had transferred it to the Mazda.

The young man remains in custody as investigations continue.
