A man from Venezuela was taken into custody Thursday after anti-narcotics officers halted a car on the West Bank of Demerara and recovered two dozen assault rifles plus bullets.

A man hailing from Venezuela was taken into custody Thursday after anti-narcotics officers halted a car travelling along the West Bank of Demerara and recovered two dozen assault rifles plus bullets concealed within.

The country's Crime Chief, Wendell Blanhum, who also serves as Assistant Commissioner of Police, informed Kaieteur News on Friday evening that the firearms originated from American manufacturing. He pointed out that identifying numbers on a single weapon remained legible, whereas the other twenty-two had theirs scratched off or otherwise made unreadable.

Specialists at the Criminal Investigation Department's forensic laboratory are now inspecting the seized items, according to Blanhum.

James Singh, who leads the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit, stated that his organisation handed the matter over to regular police once the discovery was made. The vehicle reportedly held three occupants when pulled over, yet two successfully ran away before they could be detained.

This incident represents the second large batch of AK-pattern rifles found in under a month. On May 22, a separate police operation along a public road in Berbice yielded ten comparable weapons hidden inside wrapping material. That earlier seizure resulted in the detention of a thirty-three-year-old cab driver from Goed Fortuin, plus eventual charges against two additional suspects named Gregory Persaud and Antonio Alonzo Lawrie, who gave themselves up to investigators.
