A 26-year-old man has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting his father to death in Lawrence, Massachusetts, on Monday night, nbcboston.com reports.

Lawrence police received multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots on Farnham Street. Responding officers found a 51-year-old man with numerous gunshot wounds; he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The Essex County District Attorney's Office identified the victim on Tuesday afternoon as Alexis Rodriguez Martinez. The suspect, Elvin Joaquin Rodriguez, is the victim's son.

Rodriguez was taken into custody on a warrant and charged with murder. He also faces charges of carrying a loaded firearm without a licence and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building.

At his arraignment Tuesday in Lawrence District Court, a not guilty plea was entered on Rodriguez's behalf. He was ordered held without bail; his attorney did not object to the prosecution's request.

Rodriguez is scheduled to appear in court for a probable cause hearing on 22 October.

The investigation remains ongoing and is being conducted jointly by Lawrence police, state police detectives assigned to the attorney general's office, and the state medical examiner's office.
