Antigua police flag similarities between local robberies and Jamaican crime patterns

Antigua and Barbuda's Assistant Commissioner of Police, Lisbon Michael, says some recent robberies on the island bear similarities to crimes committed elsewhere in the Caribbean, particularly in Jamaica, jamaica-gleaner.com reports.

Michael made the observation on Saturday during a local radio appearance, referring specifically to a recent armed robbery on All Saints Road. He noted that the firearm used in that incident was of a type not commonly seen in Antigua and Barbuda in recent years.

The weapon, and the manner in which the robbery was executed, were consistent with patterns previously observed in Jamaica, Michael said. He did not, however, suggest that Jamaican nationals were responsible, nor did he offer any evidence relating to the suspects' nationality.

The senior officer used the occasion to call on regional law enforcement agencies to revisit their memoranda of understanding and deepen cooperation across the Caribbean. He also recommended more rigorous screening and background checks for individuals entering Antigua and Barbuda.
