Elderly couple shot dead outside Scarborough hospital, no suspects sought

A husband and wife, both in their 70s, were shot and killed outside Providence Healthcare in Scarborough on Monday shortly after 12:30 p.m., thestar.com reports. Police located a firearm at the scene and said they are not seeking any suspects in connection with the deaths.

Duty Senior Officer Scott Shutt confirmed that the female victim was a patient at the hospital, which specializes in rehabilitative and palliative care. "We believe they were married," Shutt told reporters at the scene. When asked whether the incident was a murder-suicide, he said it was too early in the investigation to make that determination.

Officers responded to reports of two people with gunshot wounds near Warden Avenue and St. Clair Avenue East. Despite life-saving efforts by responding officers, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not been released as police work to notify next of kin.

A heavy police presence was established in the hospital parking lot. Forensics officers cordoned off two vehicles, between which an orange tarp and an empty wheelchair were visible. Visitors were unable to leave as their cars became part of the crime scene.

The homicide unit has taken over the investigation. Police are asking anyone with information to contact them at (416) 808-2222.

Unity Health, which operates Providence Healthcare, issued a statement online: "We want to assure all patients and visitors that our hospital campus is safe and secure."
