The East Uusimaa District Court delivered its verdict today in a case in which a minor boy was accused of killing a man in Pyhtää. The crime occurred last November.
The court found the 15-year-old—now 18 years old—guilty of murder. The boy broke into a house at night in which he had never previously been. A man in his forties lived there, whom the defendant did not know.
The violence began in the bedroom. The victim fled outside bleeding heavily, but the attacker followed him to the yard area. There the perpetrator struck the victim with a crowbar to the back of the head, face and neck. The man died in the yard.
The prosecutor sought an unconditional prison sentence. Initially the youth admitted the act during questioning, but later retracted his confession. In court, he claimed that another man had committed the crime and that he had merely driven this man to the location in return for money.
The court did not find this explanation credible. According to the district court, the thorough investigation at the crime scene ruled out the alternative chain of events described by the defendant. The motive for the act remained unclear.
The preliminary investigation found no connection between the perpetrator and the victim. The young man had undergone a mental state examination before the trial.
