Shooting incidents in Lahti and Nastola: two men sentenced to six-month prison terms
The Päijät-Häme District Court has sentenced two men to firearms offences in Mukkula and Nastola in 2024. Both received six-month sentences.
District court hands down sentences in Lahti and Nastola shooting incidents
The Päijät-Häme District Court has sentenced two men for shooting incidents that occurred in 2024 in Lahti's Mukkula district and Nastola, according to Yle News.
A man born in 1989 was sentenced to six months' unconditional imprisonment for two firearms offences and careless handling. A man born in 1959, in turn, received a six-month-and-15-day suspended prison sentence and 40 daily fines totalling €240 for one firearms offence and careless handling.
Shooting in apartment building courtyard in Mukkula
The first incident occurred on 16 August 2024 on Timonkatu in Lahti's Mukkula district. The older man arrived at the younger man's residential building courtyard, demanded he come outside and fired into the air to emphasise his demand. After firing, he hid the weapon in undergrowth beneath leaves.
The younger man, who was in an apartment in the building, responded by firing from the open window of his ground-floor flat into the courtyard area several times. At the time of the incident, on a weekday evening, there were at least two other people in the courtyard, so the situation could have posed serious danger to life or health.
Shots fired from moving vehicle near primary school
Four days later, on 20 August, the younger man drove to Nastola to the older man's residential area. With a weapon, he fired from the vehicle window onto the man's residential street, which is located near a primary school. A bystander found a pistol on the street.
The younger man livestreamed the entire Nastola drive on Facebook wearing a bulletproof vest, asked for the older man's address and finally drove to fire towards his house. The residents were not present at the time of the incident.
The older man had previously made calls to the younger man in which he threatened to shoot if he did not leave Lahti.
Charges settled, weapons destroyed
The prosecutor had initially charged both men with unlawful threats as well as charging the younger man with aggravated breach of the peace of a dwelling, but withdrew these charges at the hearing after the men reached a mutual settlement. Otherwise, the men admitted their guilt. Police have seized and destroyed both weapons.
The district court issued its sentence in June. The sentence is not yet final.
