Gendarmes have apprehended an individual suspected of murdering a holidaymaker in her eighties in the Hérault. The magistrate of the Nîmes Republic validated the detention of the suspect on Tuesday evening, whilst remaining cautious about details of the ongoing investigation.

The tragedy dates back to 11 June, when the lifeless body of an 86-year-old woman was recovered from the shores of a body of water and a campsite in the Grau-du-Roi resort. The following day, prosecutor Cécile Gensac opened an investigation into voluntary homicide, ruling out the hypothesis of an accident. The deceased had been staying at a tourist establishment situated near Espiguette beach, a destination she had frequented regularly for decades.

The autopsy revealed multiple severe injuries, indicating that the attack had been particularly brutal, according to the Charente Libre website. According to France 3 régions, the arrested man reportedly admitted to the facts during his confrontation with investigators.
