FLAG! president hospitalised after homophobic attack in Marais

Pierre Picavet, president of the FLAG! association bringing together police officers and justice officials committed to combating LGBTQ+ discrimination, was seriously injured in an assault in the early hours of Saturday morning in Paris, according to information reported by TF1 Info and confirmed to the AFP by Stop Homophobie and the Paris prosecutor's office.

The incident occurred shortly before 4 a.m. at the exit of a bar in the Marais district. The victim sustained numerous injuries, including internal bleeding and an open head wound, caused notably by a bottle being thrown at him, the prosecutor's office specified. Photographs of Pierre Picavet's injuries, taken from his hospital bed, were posted on the Stop Homophobie website.

In his complaint, the victim indicated that his assailant had called him a "dirty fag" on several occasions. The prosecutor's office opened an investigation for "violence resulting in incapacity exceeding eight days committed on grounds of the victim's sexual orientation".

Pierre Picavet had revealed his status as a police officer to the perpetrator by presenting his professional identification card, which did not deter the latter from continuing the assault, the prosecutor's office specified. The alleged perpetrator, born in 2006 and with no criminal record, was intoxicated at the time of the incident.

The Stop Homophobie association denounced a "homophobic attack" targeting the president of FLAG!, an association which brings together officials from the Interior and Justice ministries.

Condemnation came swiftly from the political sphere. Emmanuel Grégoire, PS mayor of Paris, described the attack on X as an "abhorrent homophobic assault" and offered his support to Pierre Picavet. Valérie Pécresse, LR president of the Île-de-France region, also condemned the "violent homophobic assault" on the same platform.
