A court imposed the maximum sentence on Kerry Ferdinand for the murder of Leïla Laviolette, a teacher with whom he was having an extramarital affair, as well as for the murder of her two children. The sentence handed down was life imprisonment.
The tragedy unfolded on the evening when the victim informed her lover that she had begun a new relationship. The couple had been separated for approximately one month. This revelation triggered an explosion of rage in the man. Seized by uncontrollable fury, he seized a knife and cut the woman's throat. He then inflicted the same fate on the two children present in the house.
After leaving the scene of the carnage, the killer sought to cover his tracks. He contacted a practitioner of traditional magic and asked him to intervene to clear him of suspicion, in the hope that law enforcement would not identify him as the perpetrator of the crimes. This approach backfired on him: the following day, the marabout presented himself voluntarily at the police station to report the facts. He even accompanied the officers to show them the precise location where the murders had taken place.
The case provoked strong emotion in the Antilles-Guyana archipelago, where the local press followed the entire proceedings.
