Shots fired at suspected burglars in Cormeilles: 54-year-old man charged

According to Google News FR — Crime (fr), a 54-year-old man has been formally charged with attempted murder after firing repeatedly at fleeing individuals in Cormeilles (Oise) on Thursday 27 August 2026.

The incident occurred in the afternoon. Alerted by suspicious noises coming from the neighbouring property, the man in his fifties armed himself with a firearm and went out to investigate. He then spotted several individuals whom he identified as burglars fleeing across the adjoining land. He pursued them and fired repeatedly in the direction of the fleeing suspects, who nevertheless managed to leave the scene in a vehicle.

Shortly afterwards, gendarmes from the search unit of Beauvais established a link between these shots and the discovery of a 21-year-old man seriously injured in the municipality of Assainvillers, in the Somme. The victim had injuries to the torso and was taken in hand by emergency services.

The suspect was placed in police custody on the evening of 27 August. With no prior criminal convictions, he admitted to having fired his weapon but denied any intention to kill. Following the urgent investigation, the public prosecutor's office in Beauvais handed the case over to the public prosecutor's office in Senlis.

A judicial investigation for attempted murder was opened on Saturday 29 August 2026. Presented before an investigating judge at the serious crimes division of Senlis, the man was formally charged. The judge for liberties and detention, seized immediately afterwards, decided to place him under strict judicial supervision, in accordance with the prosecutor's requests.

The prosecutor's office recalls that the individual remains presumed innocent. The criminal code provides for a maximum sentence of thirty years' imprisonment for attempted murder.
