In Lima, Peru, police officers carried out an unconventional operation against a drug distributor on Wednesday: they conducted a raid dressed in the costumes of the mascots of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a video posted on the police's official TikTok account, officers can be seen dressed in costumes of the eagle Clutcho and the moose Maple breaking down a door by force and detaining a man wearing a white shirt. During the operation, packages containing white powder and a firearm were found.

Colonel Carlos Fredy Alcántara Obregón, chief of the Peruvian police's special "Green" squad, explained to news agency AP the reasons behind this unusual strategy. According to the officer, thanks to intelligence work they determined that the target was a big football fan, living in the euphoria of the World Cup. For this reason, they decided to camouflage their officers with the costumes of the tournament mascots in order to approach without raising suspicion and carry out the arrest.
This is not the first time that Peru's police have employed creative disguises in their operations. On Valentine's Day 2025, an officer dressed as a capybara and carried a turtle-shaped backpack. Previously they had also used various costumes of Marvel superheroes.
Peru's national football team did not qualify for this year's World Cup, finishing ninth among ten teams in the South American qualifiers. Peru's last participation in a World Cup was in 2018.
