The court in Aveiro began proceedings on Tuesday with the trial of a construction worker, aged 44, accused of killing a 71-year-old man. The defendant exercised his right to silence during the hearing before the panel of judges.

The victim's body was discovered in his residence by family members, already in a state of rigor mortis. The pathologists established injuries consistent with a brutal assault. Investigators from the Judicial Police collected at the body a piece of wood bearing DNA traces from both the deceased and the defendant.

In addition to the blunt object, experts found biological residues in a beer bottle indicating the suspect's presence at the scene. Among the missing items from the house were a wallet containing documents and cash, a mobile phone, and the door keys.

The arrest took place several days later in Alcobaça, where the man was living at that time. The criminal instruction court ordered preventive detention, a measure which he has been serving since then.
